I saw at Roger's on the weekend that The Memory Keeper's Daughter is now out on video...I'm hoping to get to see it next weekend, I'm curious about how they will portray the book in the movie...And I need Lisa H to make a post with the name and author of the next book for me...

My Sister's Keeper

Just to let you all know, I did a google search on "My Sister's Keeper" and apparently the movie is in production with Cameron Diaz as Sarah, Alec Baldwin as Campbell and Abigail Breslin as Anna. Just thought I'd let you know :-)

Paperback vs. Hardcover

Hi all. I was just going to make a suggestion that we pick books that are already out in paperback. It hasn't been much of an issue, but Tribute and Tweak are both only in hardcover right now. Not to sound cheap, but we can save a lot. I also don't like hardcover because they're so heavy and harder to carry around. Also, is Tweak the book we're doing for sure?

Sorry for missing out on the bulk of the meeting last night! Jamie G. stopped by with a gift for me and he was here until 9:30-ish, by which time I was useless anyway because my bedtime is around 8:30 lately :) Just wanted to fill you all in on the disappearance from the conversation...

Suggestion

Hi all, hope everyone had a filling Thanksgiving. Noticing that there hasn't been much talk on this book and everyone is busier this year I suggest we keep the book club to summers? We can still have msn chats (if we every can plan them :p) but keep the books to when we seem to have more time.

And to make things clear when is the next chat?

A meeting?

Sorry that I haven't posted this sooner but I have only been in my place for a couple of days and with school during the day and still moving during the night there hasn't been much time left over. I did find a place to live not on campus but not too far away. So Tribute, how is everyone doing with the book? If we are all finished why don't we plan to have a meeting next Sunday the 20th say 7:30 NL time? Hope you all are doing good.

My Sisters Keeper

I finished the book! I loved it so much I just could not put it down, and finished it yesterday! I won't ruin anything for those of you still reading, but I was shocked!
How is everyone else doing with the book?

I'M HOME!

I'm home! Just got in this evening and I'm loving it. Can't wait to see everyone! I like the B theme for the meeting as well. I think I will bring some brownies and beer, and a non-alcoholic drink for the mom-to-be of course that starts with a B. The only thing I can come up with is Barq's root beer, which I think is caffeine free as well.

Another movie

I was at the supermarket and on the cover of Reader's Digest was a story about a Canadian teen who has Downs and she will be playing the daughter in the movie version of The Memory Keepers Daughter. Hope this one is good.

Sunday, June 15, 2008

I just thought to post on here that if Megs or Krista wants to borrow my copy of the Other Boleyn Girl, I'm finished with it. :) Hope you all are enjoying the selection.

The Other Boleyn Girl

I've started the book and I'm about 100 pages in. I really like it so far. I'm so happy that I'll be able to attend the next meeting in person! I was thinking we could have it in the first week of July, since I'll be home by July 2nd. Then maybe by the time we do my next book I'll still be home for the meeting and we could have it at my parent's house. Let me know what you think. :)

summertime

Hi guys! Long time, no blog. At least on my end. I've been checking your blogs, and you seem to be doing pretty well :)

Now that the semester's over, I have time to read fun books again. I'm looking forward to joining the next book club meeting. Megs, 'A Dirty Job' is the book, right? I googled, and it sounds fun. A Terry Pratchett/Neil Gaiman sort of book.

I'm almost finished the book I bought the day I passed in my last paper (you know you're a book nerd when you hit the book store before the bar after a long bought of work): Margaret Atwood's "The Blind Assassin." As usual for Atwood, it's compelling writing, but the book also won a bunch of crime writers' awards and so far there's nothing criminal to be seen! Just the usual familial dysfunction and cynicism. I live in hope that a mystery will crop up soon.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to Megs' book, and to existing in the world beyond law school again. I hope you are all doing well & I'll talk to you soon, xox :)

For Chocolate Lovers everywhere

In honor of our latest book 'Chocolate Lover's Club' I thought I would post some of my favorite death by chocolate recipes:

Extra - Moist Chocolate Cake (from Celebraity Lights, Carolyn Waldo)
1 pkg chocolate Cake mix (e.g. devil's food)
1 large pkg chocolate pudding (cooked, not instant)
1 cup sour cream
1/2 cup warm water
1/2 cup oil
4 eggs
1 cup chocolate chips

Mix everything together and fold in chocolate chips. Cake in a bundt pan or a 9-inch by 13-inch pan. Bake for 45 to 55 mintues at 350 degrees F.

*~*~*~*~*

Moosewood Fudge Brownies (from Moosewood Restaurant Cooks at Home)
1/2 cup butter
3 squares (1 ounce each) unsweetened chocolate (I use 2 1/2 bars - 35g of 70% cocoa Lindtt)
1 cup lightly packed brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 large eggs
1/2 cup unbleached white flour

preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
Butter an 8 or 9-inch square baking pan.

In a heavy large pot, melt the butter and chocolate together, stirring occasionally. While they melt, assemble the rest of the ingredients (if mixing by hand, beat the eggs with a fork in a separate bowl). When the butter and chocolate have melted, remove pot from heat. Add the brown sugar and vanilla, mixing by hand or mixer. Add the eggs and stir in the flour, mix until the batter is thoroughly blended and smooth.

Pour the batter into the pan and bake for about 20 minutes, until the brownies are just begining to pull away from the sides of the band and are fudge in the centre. For more cakeloke brownies, bake an additional 5 minutes.

~*~*~*~*~*~

Hope you all enjoy!

I finished the book..

Hi everyone! I thought we were going to update more often! Since it's been a while and I just finished the book yesterday I thought I would make a post. I loved the book and I can't wait to read the sequel. The girls meeting at Chocolate Heaven remind me of us and how we always get together at Starbucks. Is everyone else finished reading it? I really wish we could have a physical meeting (not just online) so we could eat lots of chocolate treats together!
I have a neat idea for a meeting theme when I do my next book. Hopefully the meeting would correspond with me being home so we can do it. I guess I will keep it a secret for now.
Is "A Dirty Job" still the next book Megs? I already have it so I hope so. Well, happy reading everyone! :)

I think I have OD

...on junk food books. Because of this my feelings towards this book are a bit muddled. It also has been over a month since I finished so I may need to do a quick skim to remember my points. Overall when I was finished I was craving a chocolate haven much like that in the book and figured I would borrow the sequel but not spend money on it - unless found really cheep second hand.

CLC

I agree that we should do more posting. It seems that we only post when we first start a book or when we're planning a meeting. I am about 20 pages into the latest book and I love it so far. It is making me realize how much I love chocolate! I always want to eat some when I read it. I think we should discuss what books we are reading besides the book club books too and give recommendations. I am finishing "The Luckiest Girl" by Beverly Cleary, it's a 50's teen book that I used to love in my early teen years. Once that's done I'll be getting more into the latest book.

P.S. I love you (all).

Chocolate Lovers Club

so ladies, I have finished the Chocolate Lovers Club...how is everyone else doing with theirs? I am head over heels in love with the book. Thats all I'll say for now :)

So, I am going back and revisiting Love Walked In, because I missed it when the book club did it. So far so good for that one too.

We should get more postings about the book and what we think/are currently reading on the go here....any takers?

Tuesday, April 8, 2008

Girls, I've started The Chocolate Lovers Club...and I love it so far! Much much better than P.S. I Love You. Check out comment number 12 on the last post...not sure what to think of it!

Monday, March 24, 2008

Ok, so I am starting P.S. I Love You tonight! We should set a date for the meeting...give me at least a week, and I'll have this finished...

Thursday, March 20, 2008

Hey everyone! Yeah I'm still alive :) Thanks again to you girls for all your love and prayers...It really makes you appreciate how lucky you are when you get support like that. So, for the book, I am going to try and get it from Megs this weekend (if she is finished) and it won't take me long to get through it since I often read on my hour lunch break as well...

Tuesday, March 18, 2008

When I started reading P.S, I discovered I had read one other book by the same author - I'll be Seeing you. It was one of the books I picked up (and left) on the trip though Italy last June. I liked this one much better.

Gulliver say Hi or Get off the computer...it is open to interpretation :P

Wednesday, March 12, 2008

Ok, Meg brought to my attention a while ago that the book I chose is the second in a series.

So I just want to know what book you all bought (if you have it already):

The Chocolate Lovers' Club OR
The Chocolate Lovers' Diet

Please let me know if you want to read the first in the series, or the second.

Thanks!!!

Miss you all!!

Time for an update!

Hi all. I just thought I would check-in and see how everyone is doing with the book since it has been so long since the last post. Does everyone have it at this point? I am going to be finishing it today. The next two books sound really good and I can't wait to start reading them. Just wondering, Kate are you reading this one? And Lis, how are you? According to your msn you are still in London. Hope your mom is doing better. :)

Monday, February 25, 2008

Finally have found Sarah's book today and have the first chapter read. This and Krista's were hard to find. In the spirit of hard to find books I am posting my choice to give everyone lots of time to find: Dirty Job by Christopher Moore.

Lisa H. - is your choice Chocolate Lover's Diet or The Chocolate Lover's Club? Diet seems to be a sequel to club was wondering before I buy.

Happy reading everyone

Official Book Annoucement...

I am very pleased to annouce (f0r those who don't already know) that my book choice is "P.S. I Love You" by Cecelia Ahern. I have started reading it today, and so far it is fabulous. I have not seen the movie yet, and I'm going to wait until I finish the book to do that. The movie trailer caught my eye and when I heard there is a book I thought it seems like such a great story that would make a good book. Hope everyone has fun reading! :) Let me know when you finish.

Persepolis

As per my usual Thursday night, I just got back from the MUN cinema series with my dad. This weeks movie was Persepolis, a French animated movie based on the 2-volume graphic novels by Marjane Satrapi. It is autobiographical, starting in 1978 and the Islamic revolution that changed her country. Coming out I thought it was an interesting companion to go with Veil of Roses. This goes more into the revolution and sheds some light on why the mother may have wanted to return to Iran from the United States. If you have a chance go see this film or sent it, it is well worth your time.

Speachless

I just finished 'Love Walked In' and I laughed and cried - teared up really but still - and can't wait to talk about it. Good choice, Krista

Book Choice?

I guess that I should figure out my book choice, as I am the choice after Sarah, and I want to give everyone plenty of time to buy it. So I have a choice for all you to make. If someone has already read any of the ones I list, tell me. I want this to be one that no one has read yet... If you have a preference, tell me.

1) The Jane Austen Book Club (By Karen Joy Fowler)
2) Eat Pray Love (By Elizabeth Gilbert)
3) The Almost Moon (By Alice Sebold)
4) The Chocolate Lovers' Diet (By Carole Matthews)
5) A Complicated Kindness (By Miriam Toews)
6) Alice, I Think (By Susan Juby)

I know this is a lot of choices, but I own them all and am eager to read them. So give me your opinions and I'll let you know what I finally choose. :-)

Monday, January 21, 2008

Finally!

nevermind Krista, I got 'Love Walked In' today at Chapters but it was sure hard to find. I'll start it tonight or tomorrow on the bus and hopefully will be done by next week.

I'm Done!

Hi all. Just to let everyone know, I finished the book a couple days ago. How far is everyone else at this point?

Saturday, January 12, 2008

Oh and I updated the picture

Next book musing

Well as I told you at the potluck my book choice this time around is Love Walked In by Marisa De Los Santos. Hope you all got the book. I am sorry that I didn't post it sooner but my computer at home doesn't have the link bookmarked and I forgot it.
On the up side I have started the book and thanks today 6 hours at the help desk I have most of the book read. All I will say is that you are in for some twists and turns, I gasped at one point.
We well pick a date later on when I get some response back.

Enjoy the book!!!!
