Question for Laura (but everyone can say what they think)

I was wondering what your thoughts on the accuracy of a book is? Do you feel it is your obligation as an author to portray as many details as possible as true, or is it ok to go with assumptions? How do you feel when other authors"flub" their way through the details?

I ask this because I am currently reading a book, and within the first few pages I came across an assumption made by the author, and in turn, it almost turned me off the book, or gave me a different perception of it. I find this happens a lot when it comes to any 'facts' about Newfoundland by non-Newfoundland authors. As in the book I'm reading, it stated that the girl, while looking at Cape Spear from her window, saw icebergs float past in autumn - icebergs are a spring/early summer occurrence. In another novel by John Grisham (I think it was him) stated that the character lived in an igloo in Newfoundland.

These assumptions kinda bother me because I know the difference. It makes me wonder what other assumptions I am reading that I do not know about...

To the rest of the book club: Is there anywhere around Cape Spear where you can sit in your window and see it? Maddox Cove? I wasn't quite sure about this fact because I haven't been out that way in a while - can anyone help me?

hi guys!

for my inaugural post, I just want to say Hi and that I'm sad that we can't all be sitting around a table in St. John's, drinking tea (or G&Ts) for this. This semester has gone by so quickly so far that it's like 2 jobs just keeping up. I know it'll be Christmas vacation before long and I'll be in St. John's, though.

Lis, you mentioned that it would be my turn to pick a book? well, I read several good ones over the summer and now's my chance to get you all to read one of them too! I really liked "White Teeth" by Zadie Smith. It's fun to read, and it's about a lot of things (and don't worry Lis, it's not violent, although the title kind of makes it sound that way).

So, that's my choice for the book. (yay bookclub).

Almost finished!

I'm very close to finishing the book. Can't wait to start discussing it in-depth. Also, I don't see Kate's name on the Contributor list. Is she added?

Sunday, September 23, 2007

Wow

Ok, so I just finished the book, and all I can say is WOW...

Thursday, September 20, 2007

I certainly don't mind if Kate joins as a contributor to the blog/club member. I think that she should pick the next book after Veil of Roses since we've all already had one pick, it would work perfectly. Kate, I think you should pick up a copy of Veil of Roses, I think you would like it a lot.
Hey Everyone, I just got this in an email from Kate, and I think its a great idea...Just wanted to run it by everyone else before I added her to our contributor list...What do you think?

Hi Lis,

Just wondering if I can blog on your book club blog too? and what's the next book you're reading? can I pick one (my friend SIlvia recommended some that I've been hoping to pick up soon..oh,oh, can I pick one? pretty please?)

How can we say no to a pretty please?!?
Oh, as we all know, I'm an idiot. I think I screwed up all your hard work Lis! I tried to fix it, but if I did it wrong, please don't be mad at me, I meant to put the map in my blog, not the book club's.

P.S. Loving the book thus far!

We are star-struck.....

First of all Sarah that is an awesome job with the introduction.
I too am in awe that our book club has gotten the attention of the author, when I started this I thought it would just be something fun for all of us to do as we all love to read and often share books with each other. How many times have the Antia Blake books made the rounds? The next logical step was to start a book club. I remember the day I brought it up I was driving to Chapters with Megs and Lisa H and started with the phase I have an idea of something we should do and Lisa H. chimed in with are you thinking of a book club? Freaky but when I told Sarah and Lis at chapters Sarah said are thinking of a book club? Goes to show how close we are.
Reading the books that we have chosen has been fun and they so far have matched us in some way. Now that we are apart for different reasons this gives us a reason, though we don't need one, to keep in touch.
I am excited to have my choice come around again, although I have no idea what I am going to choose.
Lis I should be able to make Oct. 13 at 8pm. If it changes I will let you know.

My Body is My Own Business

Though we have a great degree of freedom when it comes to our appearance and clothing when compared to Persian women, we have many societal pressures and judgements to face. These days, the current definition of beauty involves being thin, wearing designer clothes, with manicured nails perfectly coiffed hair, and so on. I'm not saying I agree or this is universally true but this is the definition of beauty as portrayed by the media as the desired standard in our culture. It takes so much maintenance in order to keep up with this appearance.
During my teaching internship I had the students in my English class read a short essay from their textbook entitled "My Body is My Own Business". In the essay a Persian woman who had been living in the States for a few years gave reasons why she continued to wear her Hejab though she was not "required" to do so. Her reasoning was that while she is wearing it she can escape the pressures that society places on women and their appearance. She does not have to worry about wearing make-up or be concerned about her body, and so on. This is an interesting perspective.
I think that as women we have to be very cautious about how the media can make us feel about ourselves. I don't think any woman can say that they haven't felt a little bit inadequate when it comes to their appearance. I guess we all need to find a balance between feeling good about ourselves without feeling we have to conform to what society tells us we should look like.

An Introduction

First of all I would like to say to Ms. Fitzgerald I am really pleased and excited that you are now involved in our little club. It is a dream come true for a book club to be able to discuss their current book with the actual author, so we are really amazed and happy that you are reading this!
I know that we are all friends and that you don't know much about us yet so I thought I would you give a little introduction. The five of us have been friends for a number of years, and our book club started in June. It was Krista's idea, she figured that since we all love to read why not read the same books at the same time and have a get-together after each book to discuss it? We are all originally from Newfoundland, Canada and at that point we were all in the St. John's area, but since then many of us have relocated. Lisa A and Megan are still in St. John's, Krista has moved to Corner Brook, Newfoundland, Lisa H moved to Calgary, Alberta and I am now in Rothesay, New Brunswick. My fiancée and I recently completed Education degrees and he was lucky enough to get a teaching job here. Hopefully I will eventually get a job too, in the meantime I will be working as a substitute teacher.
Since we are all scattered around the country we decided to start this blog to keep in touch and discuss what we are reading. "Veil of Roses" is our fifth book, and was chosen by Lisa A. Krista is next and will be choosing a book next month for the second time around. If you have any book recommendations please let us know. :)

Veil of Roses

One thing I have to say that really works in this books favor for me and people like me is that it manages to get across the harsh and sometimes violent consequences for being a woman in Iran without giving too many grotesque details. I hate how some books go so far into their descriptions of horrible things that it may as well just have been a horror movie splattering blood and broken body parts onto my TV screen.

This book gets the image across and my imagination fills in the rest - Kudos to Laura Fitzgerald for being able to do that!

The Story Behind the Story - www.laurafitzgerald.com

The Story Behind the Story (written by Laura Fitzgerald, taken from the web site)

In 1988, when I met the man I'd eventually marry, I asked him where he was born. His English was flawless and his mannerisms American. It was only his name that marked him as foreign.

"Persia," he replied.

Now, geography has never been my strong suit. But Persia? Where the hell was that, next to Tunisia? I had no idea. I at least should have known its capital, because I'd memorized the capitals of the world back in elementary school and still remembered most of them. (The capital of Tunisia, by the way, is Tunis.) I'd asked this handsome fella a simple question - now where was my simple answer?

"Where exactly is Persia?" I asked. "I forgot."

His creamy-coffee eyes stayed polite, but I swear he gave a little here-we-go-again sigh. "Well, what was the Persian Empire eventually got divided up into many of the countries of the Middle East, such as Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan."

Mmmm Hmmm. This guy was cute, but quite the tap dancer.
"Well, so what are you?" I asked it pointedly this time.
After a pause: "I was born in Tehran."
A more polite person (or a lesser flirt) would have let him off the hook. But not me. "So that must make you….?"
"Iranian," he finally said. "I'm Iranian."
I grinned, victorious. He smiled back at me graciously.

And so it began.
What I learned that day still holds true: Nothing about Iran is simple.

=+=

I've met several Iranian women during their first few months in this country, and I've had the great pleasure of getting to see the United States through their eyes. It's quite a gift, for a writer to get to see her world through fresh eyes.

"What's the biggest difference between American women and Iranian women?" I asked my new sister-in-law.

Her answer was immediate. "American women have wrinkles around their eyes from laughing so much. The skin of Iranian women is much smoother."

Laugh lines. That's how we're different.

Stories are quests, and writing a story about a woman in search of laugh lines struck me as a great one.

People who've read Veil of Roses have told me they've found Tami Soroush to be a very endearing character. How, they asked, were you able to write from the point of view of an Iranian woman in such a believable manner?

Here's what I did: I took my own life and subtracted from it every facet I'd have to give up if I lived in Iran. I quickly realized how much my world would shrink. My day usually begins with a jog through town with Julie, my running partner. In the hot Arizona summers, we wear the bare minimum of clothing as we can get away with. Couldn't do that in Iran! If some jerks drive by and honk at us, we can flip them the bird if we want to. Couldn't do that in Iran!

You can take it from there. I subtracted all those things from my life, then tried to figure out what I'd add back in, and what qualities would most be needed to create the sort of life I would want if I got to do it all over again. In many ways, I think it's harder to be happy in life than it is to be unhappy, because it takes a constant recommitment to the very concept of happiness. And it takes courage to refuse to settle for anything less.

It's the quest of a lifetime, and that's why I made it Tami's quest as well. She was on a search for happiness (her very name, Soroush, means happiness). She was on a search for laugh lines. I think she was on the noblest of quests.

Hi from Calgary!!

First, I would like to say what an honor it is that Laura Fitzgerald is actually reading our blog. I'm in awe here!!

Second, I just started the book today, and am enjoying it already. I'm not too far in, but the situation and description given is amazing! Can't wait to read some more! Sorry it took me so long to start, but with my move and all, and being in the middle of a book already it has taken longer than I thought.

Third, I may be a bit later somehow attending the next "meeting" as 8:00 there is 4:30 here, and hopefully by then I will be working, and I doubt I will be home by then. But I have Roger's My5, so I can put either Megs, or Lis's number in my My5 for the month and call during the meeting. Or I can just go on MSN...

Krista: Start thinking about your next selection! I can't wait for it to be my turn again!!!

Hey guys,

I also added the map thingie that I had on my own blog - Hopefully no one minds me customizing this thing, I just am curious about who reads this thing! And, how cool is it that Laura Fitzgerald herself reads our blog? Time to start posting comments/questions about Veil of Roses on here...
For interest, Laura Fitzgerald's website is www.laurafitzgerald.com And on it is this quote about the making of Veil of Roses:

"Bend It Like Beckham. My Big Fat Greek Wedding. Fools Rush In. Green Card. Spanglish. Delightful, heart-warming, cross-cultural romantic-comedy movies. And after each one, I'd turn to my husband and say, "There needs to be a movie like this about an Iranian woman." And he'd always say, "Get to it.""
Yeah, the thought of actually getting to direct questions to the author is really cool! I really liked the book Veil of Roses, so I hope that you all will like it too! How is everyone progressing with the story? Something that I can say without giving too much away for those who haven't read it yet is that I found the book really enlightening about Women's rights in Iran. We hear so much about Iran on the news, but really I know nothing about life in Iran - or I didn't before I read this book. And I find it fascinating and horrifying at the same time. We'll talk about that more at the meeting I'm sure. Speaking of the meeting, it will be on October 13th around 8 pm Newfoundland Time, unless there are any major conflictions with your schedules - let me know if this is an OK date and time, alright?

Should we bother with a theme for this one? Since we're all going to be scattered? Again, I want to know your thoughts.

To the author, if you are keeping up with this, perhaps we could pose questions through this blog as we read the book?

Cool

Wow, Krista! That is really amazing that she found our blog and got a hold of your email somehow!

The email that people are talking about

Okay here is the thing I was checking my hotmail account one day and before I delete my Junk mail folder I check just to make sure that it is all junk. So this one day there was an email and it said that it was from Laura Ftizgerald who is the author of the book that we are reading. I opened it and sadly because it was junk mail it got delete....but here is the idea of it.

Hello thanks to google technology I found out that you book club chose my book for one of its selection. I like to get in touch with book clubs who do this and just say hello to them and let them know if they have any questions while discussing the book that I would be open to any.

Laura

Anyways so that is what Lis is talking about. I find it a little weird that I am the only one who got this email and to my hotmail, when all our names are on the blog.

Author?

What happened to the author? What email are you talking about Krista? I am curious now I am going to look up the author online.
I changed my name to Lis without the A...Hopefully this will make for less confusion since there are two Lisa's now, but I was always just Lis anyway :)Hopefully Krista can post on here what has happened with the Author of Veil of Roses, I'm not sure if everyone is up to date on that...Then I will reveal the date for our book club pow-wow...

Banner of a time

I have to say Lisa a fine job on the banner. I love it from the letter in the title to the picture. I think that is one of the best pictures of the group from this summer.

Veil of Roses

I was just wondering if everyone was able to get their hands on the latest book? I checked with the Coles in Saint John and they didn't have any copies so I had to order it online. I read an excerpt though on the Chapters website of the first 3 chapters and I liked what I read a lot. I should get my copy by this Friday.
In the meantime I am reading Anne of Green Gables by Lucy Maud Montgomery. It's my first time reading it but I have always loved the movie. I love the book so far.

The Golden Compass

Hey guys!
Lis I really love the title banner/picture combination, it really adds a personal touch to this blog! I agree with Lisa H we should definitely have a meeting during Christmas. We could combine it with our gift opening or something too. Well I loved talking to you all the other night and was really glad I could be part of the fun. I miss you all and it was a great way to keep in touch. Too bad the webcam thing didn't work out but there is always next time.
Well since I didn't get to really discuss the book very much or hear your opinions I just have a few comments/questions about "The Golden Compass" that I wanted to share the other night but couldn't since we talked about so many other things. I love how the book usually becomes secondary to our chatting and what is going on in our lives though.
Okay, first of all, I did enjoy the book and I would give it a 3.5/5 rating. The reason for this is that I am not a huge fan of fantasy or adventure books and I haven't read much of it. I also found the book sort of slow in the beginning and just had to keep reading until things started to happen. I think the book will make a really good movie if done well, sort of similiar to movies like Harry Potter and the Chronicles of Narnia.
One of the questions I have about the book is whether it is set in the past or the future? I found the time period sort of ambiguous and maybe this is the point. There is a lot of technology in the book that we don't have so that makes me think of the future, but then I think it could be the past too. I also wondered if the people in the book are living on earth, or in the same world as us, and if not this might explain the time thing.
I also wondered if there is a prequel to this book? There are a lot of things I feel are unexplained like why they have daemons and the politics going on, and so on. At the end of the book I wasn't really sure if Lord Asriel is bad or not? I know he wanted to sacrifice Lyra's friend Roger to get into the other world and he is going after Dust because he thinks it is bad, and that Lyra thinks it is good in the end so she goes to stop him. I really was hoping that he would be happy to see her when she saw him but was disappointed in his reaction to her. I really thought he was going to be a good guy but I wasn't sure by the end.
So those are just some of my comments on the book, let me know what you think or if you can answer any of my questions.
Lis: I love the banner!

I agree that we should invite Kate and no it has not been done yet.

I was looking on chapters website and it is looking like there is only one copy of the book in St. John's. I guess Sarah and Lisa H. you can yours while your away. Krista I'll see if there is a second hiding somewhere or one of us could order it? Either that or share. I am off to chapter today after work so I will check things out.

I am going to miss all of us getting together too!
Okay guys, sorry I've been such a drag on this lately, aka not writing at all, but I promise to get better, especially since I am leaving soon. I have a few things to say now:

1) I think we should add Kate to the list of people in the club as she is trying to read with us now too... I think. If this is already done, sorry I missed it :-)

2) I'm looking forward to reading "Veil of Roses" we just forgot to say when it has to be done by. I will be sure to post my review/call/be on MSN that time. I really wish I could be at the meeting though.

3) I'm really going to miss pigging out and discussing the book/dishing about everything and ignoring the book... we must make sure to have a meeting during X-Mas :-)

Love you all!

Lisa

Like what I did with the title?

Monday, September 3, 2007

Oh, and the next book for our book club, my selection is: Veil of Roses by Laura Fitzgerald
So, my memory is failing me...What was the name we decided on for the book club? Was it: Dynamite Women Do Books?
