Hey guys!
Lis I really love the title banner/picture combination, it really adds a personal touch to this blog! I agree with Lisa H we should definitely have a meeting during Christmas. We could combine it with our gift opening or something too. Well I loved talking to you all the other night and was really glad I could be part of the fun. I miss you all and it was a great way to keep in touch. Too bad the webcam thing didn't work out but there is always next time.
Well since I didn't get to really discuss the book very much or hear your opinions I just have a few comments/questions about "The Golden Compass" that I wanted to share the other night but couldn't since we talked about so many other things. I love how the book usually becomes secondary to our chatting and what is going on in our lives though.
Okay, first of all, I did enjoy the book and I would give it a 3.5/5 rating. The reason for this is that I am not a huge fan of fantasy or adventure books and I haven't read much of it. I also found the book sort of slow in the beginning and just had to keep reading until things started to happen. I think the book will make a really good movie if done well, sort of similiar to movies like Harry Potter and the Chronicles of Narnia.
One of the questions I have about the book is whether it is set in the past or the future? I found the time period sort of ambiguous and maybe this is the point. There is a lot of technology in the book that we don't have so that makes me think of the future, but then I think it could be the past too. I also wondered if the people in the book are living on earth, or in the same world as us, and if not this might explain the time thing.
I also wondered if there is a prequel to this book? There are a lot of things I feel are unexplained like why they have daemons and the politics going on, and so on. At the end of the book I wasn't really sure if Lord Asriel is bad or not? I know he wanted to sacrifice Lyra's friend Roger to get into the other world and he is going after Dust because he thinks it is bad, and that Lyra thinks it is good in the end so she goes to stop him. I really was hoping that he would be happy to see her when she saw him but was disappointed in his reaction to her. I really thought he was going to be a good guy but I wasn't sure by the end.
So those are just some of my comments on the book, let me know what you think or if you can answer any of my questions.

Hey Sarah,
I am sorry you didn't enjoy this book as much but I think that was one of our goals - to expose each other to other types of books. I will try and answer some of your questions.
I think the point that will answer alot of your questions is that the book is sent in a world that is not our own. There is a theory that all things are possible but the moment a decisions is made all other possibles cease to exist in that reality. This then creates other realities that the opposite was done. Thus the other world becomes similar but different. I hope I explained that ok and my spelling didn't get to much in the way. My point is that the theory could account for the simlarites but difference.
As for the Daemons the idea is that our a physical representation of our soul. There isn't a prequel but there are two sequels and this book sets up things that are further explored and explained.
I am not sure what I think of the movie and will reserve judgment until I see it this Christmas.
Ok long comment and I hope it answer at least some of you questions, Sarah.
